Importance Of Technology In Oil And Gas Industry - Importance of Technology

Overview

The Department of Oil Technology at HBTU (formerly HBTI) Kanpur is the institution’s oldest department, established in 1921. It offers B.Tech., M.Tech., and Ph.D. programs, with the B.Tech. program accredited by the NBA until 2025. Over the years, the department has made significant advancements, supported by a highly qualified faculty with Ph.D. degrees and numerous research publications in esteemed national and international journals. Faculty members frequently present their research at international conferences, fostering a strong global presence.

The department maintains robust collaborations with national and international institutions and industries, successfully completing multiple research and development projects. Notably, it has executed several projects funded by prestigious national agencies like AICTE, DST, CSIR, and UPCST. A prominent Indo-Canadian partnership with the University of Guelph, Canada, exemplifies its commitment to international collaboration.

The establishment of the Centre of Excellence on “Applied Research Training and Education in Lipid Science” under TEQIP-II (a World Bank initiative) has further enhanced the department’s capabilities. The Advanced Surfactant Laboratory, equipped with modern instruments such as UV-Visible spectrophotometers, GC-MS, and Rheometers, supports cutting-edge research. Additionally, a Knowledge Resource Center has been set up with 20 desktop computers and specialized software to bolster R&D activities, alongside a collection of new books focused on the thematic areas of the center.

The department has signed MoUs with various industries, including Ruchi Soya Industries Ltd. and FARELABS, which provide financial assistance and scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students. The placement scenario for graduates is exceptional, with nearly all securing jobs through campus placements in reputable organizations. The department is also the birthplace of the Oil Technologists’ Association of India (OTAI), which operates effectively from its premises.
